How should I choose a coach?
You should always interview a prospective coach before hiring them. Things to ask about:
Are there benefits to working with a licensed clinician (LICSW) vs an unlicensed coach?
Yes. Coaching is not a regulated profession like social work. It is a young profession and while there are credentials, they are arbitrary. I am a licensed therapist and have completed coaching training as a life coach and with additional training specific to ADD. As a licensed therapist, I have extensive experience treating conditions often associated with ADHD, such as anxiety and depression. I am bound by the ethical guidelines of the social work profession. I extend this ethical lens to my coaching work.
How do I know whether I need therapy or coaching?
Each case is unique. The best way to answer this question is to contact me to discuss your situation. Generally, you may consider coaching if you’re seeking to achieve specific goals, behavioral changes, better ways of doing things, or if you’re feeling stuck around specific areas in your life. You may have an ADD diagnosis and understand how it impacts your life but still feel like you’re having difficulty moving forward (e.g., professionally, personally, academically). Many clients benefit from completing therapeutic work first, then progressing to coaching, while others are more responsive to coaching strategies only. Coaching may be done virtually (e.g., FaceTime or Skype, Email), while therapy is done face-to-face, in office.
What amount of time do you typically work with clients as a coach?
The span of time I work with a client depends on their goals. The timeline is generally more abbreviated for short-term goals or longer for pervasive issues, such as chronic disorganization. I have worked with clients as short as 3 months and as long as several years.
I have not been diagnosed with ADD but I think I may have symptoms. Can you help?
Before working with me, many of my clients had been misdiagnosed or undiagnosed and were engaged in self blame (e.g., “I’m lazy … I don’t try hard enough … I’m unmotivated). By assessing symptoms and providing a diagnosis, I’ve seen clients make great strides to manage ADD. You may wish to complete this online Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD/ADHD) Test to help determine your potential need for diagnosis and treatment.

You should always interview a prospective coach before hiring them. Things to ask about:
- Do they have training ADD-specific coaching?
- Approach to coaching?
- Who do they work with and what types of issues do they work on?
- Avoid disclosing what you’re seeking help for; ask the coach to explain their expertise first. Some coaches will try to solve all issues, without having the appropriate experience to do so.
- How does the coach work? In person? Virtually? What are you seeking and what will be most effective for you?
- What experience does the coach have (especially relative to ADD) and how long have they practiced?
